Swan Falls Dam
Stop 9 - First dam on the Snake River
Swan Falls Dam was built in 1901 to supply electricity to early mining towns in the Owyhee Mountains. The dam is the oldest hydroelectric facility on the Snake River. Swan Falls was one of the first hydroelectric plants to generate three phase power, the same electricity standard used today. During the mid 1990's a new powerplant was built and the old power houses were decomissioned. The power plant now serves as a historic museum.
Falcilities include a picnic area, flush toilets, and a boat ramp. Tours of the dam can be scheduled by contacting Idaho Power Company at (208) 736-3458.
